Dipinkara Wut ( The East Shrine)

This shrine was built in 1892 also by U Nar Auk. It consists of the shrine room proper surrounded on three sides by a corridor. The shrine is roofed by a pyathat spire with 9 decorated tiers. The notable feature about the shrine is that it houses two huge standing Buddha images each carved out of single teak logs. The taller one is over 15 feet high while the shorter image is about 14 feet. The decor over the inner walls of the shrine consists of a variety of traditional designs painted in gold over a red background. The door also have gold painted designs including pictures of human and 'Nat' figures. The ceilings are subdivided into geometrical areas each having glass mosaic patterns with central figurines and rimmed in gold frames; again, not unlike those seen in the Theingyi ceilings. The pillers are covered in glass mosaicwork. The corridors display a series of relief carvings depicting the previous lives of the Buddha.

Condition of the shrine

  • The spire had recently been repaired and repainted.
  • The gold painted designs have faded and the glass mosaics are peeling off in some places.

The twin Buddha, the centerpiece of the shrine is the huge twin Buddha images carved out of single teak log pieces. Note the background traditional designs in gold and red, similar to those in the Theingyi and Hna Kyeik Shit Su shrines.

As in the Hna Kyeik Shit Su shrine, teak carved figures relating the lives of the Buddha stretch across the corridors.
